This is the Final Year of the Popular Fishing Tournament Due to the Impending State-Mandated Closure of the AES Barbers Point Coal-Fired Power Plant
AES Hawai‘i Keiki Fishing Tournament Resumes After Three-Year Hiatus Due to COVID-19
HONOLULU – May 7, 2022 – For the first time in three years, the AES Hawai‘i Keiki Fishing Tournament was held today for employees of the Barbers Point coal-fired power plant and their family members at Sand Island State Park. The popular fishing tournament was cancelled the past two years to help prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
More than 160 AES employees and family members, including more than 60 keiki, took part in the fun, family-oriented fishing tournament.
Prizes for the heaviest fish caught were awarded in three categories for the keiki (ages 5 and under; ages 6-10; and ages 11-15) as well as for adults.
Unfortunately, this was also the last year of the fishing tournament, as the coal-fired power plant is being shut down on September 1, in accordance with state law. The power plant has been in operation at Barbers Point for 30 years and currently supplies up to 20% of O‘ahu’s energy needs at the lowest-available cost to consumers at 12-cents per kilowatt hour.
